Official Home of Penn State Athletics

GoPSUsports.com - Official Home of Penn State Athletics: "Penn State vs. Sacred Heart is Family Night (kids get in free with their parents) and Buck Night (all fans with a hunting license get in for one dollar, get one dollar concession stand items and get one dollar off of any future Nittany Lion home basketball game). Come out and support Nittany Lion Basketball!"

One of my favorite people ever, Jamaal Tate, plays for Penn State so I try to keep up with the teams activies, but that is just a bit to extreme for me. Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't think to group "family night" and "buck night" into the same game. but hey, this is comming from a jersey girl.

Why aren't people more outraged?

Yahoo! News - Violence in North Darfur Hinders Aid

I wish I had more time to talk about why we NEED to pump as much aid into Africa as possible, but I don't right now, so please read this article and get pissed, but more than getting pissed do something about it.

"The United Nations accepts voluntary financial contributions provided that the purpose for which the contributions are made is consistent with the aims and activities of the Organization. Cheques or money orders made payable to the United Nations may be sent to: The Treasurer, Room S-2770A, United Nations, New York, NY 10017. The United Nations cannot provide financial assistance to individuals or private organizations. Being a Organization of sovereign States, its funds are allocated only to programmes which have been officially approved by its Members."

The Red Cross combats HIV/AIDS in Lesotho and throughout southern Africa

The Red Cross combats HIV/AIDS in Lesotho and throughout southern Africa:

"In Lesotho, where 31 percent of people are infected with HIV,".....

31% of the population. That is insane. What's more insane is that it can be prevented. We can help prevent it. It is almost 2005 and with all of our technological advances, why is 31% of the population in Lesotho infected with AIDS? 20% of the children are orphans! And furthermore, why are people not outraged. Why are people not taking to the streets to demand that our government, the rest of the world, do more? What is going on here? If this were going on in Europe we would never hear the end of it. If this were going on in America it would be like the sky is falling. Africans are our brothers and sisters and we NEED to do something for them. 13 year old children should not be raising their siblings because they have no living relatives older than they are. Orphanages are so overcrowded these children have to sleep on the floor, and I'm betting they probably don't have too many luxuries, because most places would consider beds a necessity, and when you don't have necessities most likely you don't have much else.

And the thought I keep comming back to, is that if people could give a small amount every month, it would really add up. Especially in places where there is nothing to start with, places like Africa. Personally, I'm at a point where I can finally put my money where my mouth is and I intend to do just that. I hope some people out there join me. AIDS is not going to go away on its own.....

Last weekend I decided to trek to upstate New York to spend some quality time with Matt and Otis. Personally, I think the weekend detox did him some good (Matt that is, not Otis). So, Matt and I pulled out of Hoboken circa 11:30 on Saturday morning. We probably could have made it out a bit earlier but apparently Stevens Alumni all hang out on the corner of Newark and River St. so we got a bit sidetracked. But once the impromptu gathering broke up we were on our way.

I like to think of myself as one of the best co-pilots out there. I take the job quite seriously. I try to keep the radio functioning at top levels at all time, I like to keep the driver hydrated, and in good spirits. Though, this trip I must admit to slacking a bit. I didn't even realize I was until i glanced over and noticed Matt spending more time reading along in my magazine than watching the road. But in my defense, I took to reading aloud after noticing my faux pas.

When we were just a couple of miles from his house, and many more miles from any real civilization we decided to pull into a food store to pick up some items for lunch. We picked up some tuna, mayo, milk, tomatoes, lettuce, and my favorite: the jellyfilled cookies. After our purcheses were paid for we were ready to kick off the final leg of our journey.

We got to The Carroll Residence circa 2ish and then the fun was ready to begin. After taking Otis out for a quick jog down to the pond, we ate some lunch and got settled. Then it was off to yard work. I'm not sure about you, but personally I'm a fan of yard work. I like looking at the finished product and feeling that I've accomplished something. My love for yardwork may also stem from the fact, that when I wondered off to play fetch with Otis, Matt didn't call me back. And let me tell you, there are few ways I'd rather spend my afternoon than sitting at the edge of a pond throwing a stick in and watching ol' Otis swim out to it. There's just something about seeing his propeller tail whipping around and seeing him galliently return, stick in mouth, oh so proud......man I need to get me a dog.

Saturday night was spent lying around watching TV and listening to Otis snore......or was it.....nah, this time it actually was Otis.

Sunday started off with an awesome egg/salsa concotion that Matt whipped up. Then we loaded up Otis in the car and took off to see the Vanderbilt Estate. The place was gorgeous. It's located on a cliff overlooking the Hudson. Definately an excellent way to spend an Indian Summer Afternoon. Though I think there might have been a bit too many steps for Otis' liking.

After leaveing the estate we traveled down the road to the Roosevelt Estate. Apparently back in the day Hyde Park was the place to have your estate. I'm not jealous though, after all A Tribe Called Quest is from Linden. Once seeing how the rich and famous lived, I had worked up quite an appetite; so Matt took me to McDonalds.

Once we got back to The Carroll household, it was pretty much time to call it a weekend and catch the train. Matt's dad took us to the train and we were off. The ride was really nice. The train runs along the Hudson the whole way down. Once we pulled into Grand Central it was a mad dash to the bus depot. Then dinner at the old Uberplex.

All in all, a great weekend.
